TIPPER OF THE WEEK: BECCA FERGUS

This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we’ve got Becca Fergus, writer for Clash & NARC. Magazine, who’s setting up her own gig nights/zine in Manchester. Take a look at her top picks below!

SQUID

In a frantic, saxophone-laden, post-punk blend of organised chaos, Squid deliver an aggravated passion for indoor foliage that wouldn’t go amiss as the backing track for the next Homebase advert. The Brighton-via-London outfit are contagious, peculiar and, best of all, unpredictable.

THE MURDER CAPITAL

A ferocious Dublin quintet cloaked in brutalist, simmering drum beats and a pinstripe suit, the fact only one of their tracks is circling around the virtual stratosphere is nothing short of a shame. However, they tease an upcoming album release which will showcase the passion and strong fervour hinted in the lyricism of Feeling Fades.

RADIANT CHILDREN

Drenched in neo-soul and infectious melodies, Radiant Children’s ability to make each track diverse yet still undoubtedly them is a talent in itself. And as if the London trio couldn’t get any better, the chorus to one of their recently released singles is one of the best sayings to ever exist (“life’s a bitch and then you die”).

IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE

Ibibio Sound Machine are still awaiting the badge of superstardom that they deserve. However, riding high off their week-old release ‘Doko Mien’, the eight piece’s lively, layered and multi-influenced offering tiptoes through folk, gospel, funk, electronica and traditional African music to produce a sound that appeals to the masses, cementing them as one of the most exciting and innovative bands about today.

WITCH FEVER

Pulsating and vivacious, Manchester’s Witch Fever are a force to be reckoned with. Their enticing rhythms, indescribable stage presence and ability to captivate with each screech, snarl and stare is beyond all points of impressive, and they are standing strong at the forefront of a powerful surge of new-wave punk.
