TIPPER OF THE WEEK: BRIONY CHAPPELL

This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we have Briony Chappell, presenter and producer of ‘The Hoxton Hot List’ every Tuesday 7-9pm on Hoxton Radio. She also reviews new music for The Line of Best Fit, and is always on the look out for emerging and undiscovered indie and alt-pop/rock talent. Recent guests on her Hoxton Radio show include Everyone You Know, Lauran Hibberd, Husky Loops and Weird Milk. Check out Briony’s picks below!

SPINN

New indie-pop band SPINN have a really great first album. They’re a Liverpool based four-piece and their music reminds me of everything I loved about indie music in the 2000s. Their songs are well-written, really clean and I’d love to see them come alive on stage. Ones to watch!

EVERYONE YOU KNOW

This London singer-producer duo, brothers Rhys and Harvey, make music about everyday life. They’ve released two EPs so far and their style is really varied – from softer lyrical tracks like “Wasted Love” to face-melting basslines on “Money”. Their lyrics are pretty poignant (you can find yourself in lines of every song) and the production is so solid, there’s a definite EYK stamp on each track. I love these guys and can’t wait for them to release an album.

PIXEY

Pixey is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter from Liverpool. Her song “Supersonic Love” captivated me straight away, and we’ve also played “On My Own” from her debut EP “Colours” on the show. For a new artist, she’s got a very established sound, which I think stands out because it’s so uplifting and dreamy. Her EP was also self-produced, which I think is really cool.

VANDAL PALACE

This alt-rock four-piece from Edinburgh is super new, which means their sound is still quite raw. There are a few exciting bands emerging from Scotland right now, but I think these guys have an edge because of their under-produced vibe. The band only formed this year and I reckon they’ve got loads of potential on the indie scene, as well as for a few big bangers.

SAN SCOUT

I’ve been listening to San Scout for ages and they’re one of my favourites. I love their heavy synths and emotive vocals; I think they’ve got a similar sound to older The 1975 tracks – beautifully slow and glitchy electro-pop. The London duo, Jonny and Freddie, just released a 30-min EP called “The Pharmacy”, but some of their old songs (LMS / Familiar / Soap) are definitely worth scrolling back for.
