TIPPER OF THE WEEK: ELKE NOMINIKAT

This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we have Elke Nominikat, Executive Editor of Hype Machine affiliated music blog glamglare (https://glamglare.com) which focuses on emerging artists in the indie pop, rock and electronic genres. The blog is best known for its Song Pick of the Day series, which has continuously featured a new single each day since 2015, often giving artists their first media exposure. Elke also heads ENOBO music & media, providing management and other services for artists. While calling New York City her home, Elke has a life-long love for music from Great Britain.

BLACK GOLD BUFFALO

Taking cues from the sound of some of the most exciting 80s New Wave bands, Black Gold Buffalo create their songs around pulsating beats (Joy Joseph on drums), glistening guitar lines (Marc Hayward), defining bass hooks (Hannah Holland) and the enchanting vocals of frontwoman Keziah Stilwell. Recorded and live, this London-based quartet is one to listen to and to watch out for!

SIYE

“The Mirror” by singer/songwriter and producer Slye is easily my favorite song of 2019 thanks to its smooth production, the wistful, shimmering guitar and the haunting vocals lending the track an overall infectious vibe. The Liverpool-native is also part of indie-rockers Pangea, who are currently on a hiatus.  As long as Slye continues to create exquisite songs, I don’t really mind in which formation he is in.

OCTOPUS

Looks like Manchester-based quartet Octopus won’t have any problems in making themselves known with the cool yet SEO-unfriendly band name because their intelligent alt-rock is as gorgeous as it is infectious. One might expect a song like “Happy Today” to come from a well seasoned band and yet looking at some band photos, this is definitely not the case. All the more reason to be curious with what Octopus come up next. So far, all very exciting!

BIRDYHOP

Behind indie-electronic duo BirdyHop are brothers Chris and James Goldsmith, who delight with blissfully, dreamy music, the kind you like to put on at the end of the day to rewind and relax. Living in the busy capital, they might just as well create this type of mellow music for themselves as for any other dream pop loving urbanite.

NEW LUNA

Will 2019 be New Luna’s break-through year? Hailing from Manchester, the quartet landed on my radar in fall 2017 and I have been following their musical journey ever since. It has been a while since their fantastic self-titled debut EP came out and I would love to listen to an entire album filled with their attractive blend of guitar driven indie-rock equipped with versatile power vocals and intelligent production.
