TIPPER OF THE WEEK: JORDAN SCUDDER
This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.
Next up we have Jordan Scudder, presenter at Amazing Radio where he covers numerous festivals & shines the spotlight on upcoming Hip-Hop artists. On top of this he’s a producer at BBC Three Counties and works in National Radio PR at Listen Up! Jordan’s passionate about increasing diversity in the music industry and hopes to bring change through his work with the Student Radio Association, where he looks after every station in London & the South East. Outside of music & journalism he is dedicated to destigmatizing the conversation around Mental Health Awareness. This has led him to starting Muscovy Records, a Record Label & Collective that focuses on the relationship between Music & Mental Health.
Check out Jordan’s tips below!
The North East is a hot bed for dance music at the moment. North Shields born and raised Patrick Topping has just launched his Label ‘Trick’ and recently announced DJ/Producer Elliot Adamson as his first Resident. Elliot’s just released a fantastic album called ‘PiKHAL’ that features eleven tracks of sample based, thumping House goodness. What makes this even more impressive is that this is his third release of 2019, and his fifth in a year. His incredible work rate is becoming the stuff of legend, and with his upcoming Warehouse Project performance, Rinse FM show and ‘Trick’ shows, make sure you keep an eye on this hyper-busy, rising star.
Politically driven music is more important now than ever. This tidal wave of dissatisfaction has hit every genre from Post-Punk to Hip-Hop, with IDLES, Slowthai & Fontaines DC having all seen their albums nominated for the 2019 Mercury Prize. Kojaque is a young Irish Rapper making waves known for his intricate and emotionally charged catalogue. He’s recently been announced as Slowthai’s support for his upcoming Autumn Tour also runs his own imprint label ‘Soft Boys’ which was recently the subject of a documentary by Boiler Room. His recent mixtape ‘Green Diesel’ was produced with fellow ‘Soft Boy’ Luka Palm and is an excellent taster of what this amazing artist is capable of.
Hailing from York, Popka has just released his debut EP ‘Manhattan Sidebar’ on the renowned US-based Nervous Records. Nervous specialise in Underground House & Hip-Hop with the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Armand Van Helden & Todd Terry on their books over the years. This is enough to make any young producer sweat. Luckily Popka’s three track EP has received rave reviews and leaves you yearning for more. At sixteen minutes long it takes you on a journey utilising light jazz sampling, before heading into roaring loops and finally finishing on euphoric, Balearic vibes.
Para Fiction are a raucous Brighton duo, drawing heavy inspiration from the early-era Beastie Boys. Taking on themes of science-fiction and psychedelia in their latest single ‘Time Debt’, rapper Jambo and producer Coding Dude spits bars with an electrifying, raw energy. The DIY duo grew up playing in punk bands before first meeting at a drum and bass night and earlier this year they self-released their debut EP ‘Episode 1: L££CH RIDDEN’ on their own Parasitic label. They’ve since performed with Slaves, Skinnyman, JPEGMAFIA & more before dropping two subsequent singles ‘TIME DEBT’ & very recently ‘NO COMMENT’. This mash-up of hip-hop & punk is constantly shifting and catching you by surprise but delivers exactly what it promises & more.
London based producer O’Flynn recently released his first full-length project ‘Aletheia’ after three years in the making. His catalogue up to this point has been slim, but perfectly exemplifies ‘quality over quantity’. The project utilises electronica, African vocal samples, live drums and more. Sunspear & Tru Dancing are the standout tracks featuring horn loops, heavy samples and inspire feelings of pure joy, but don’t let this overshadow the rest of the album. It’s a joyous experience from beginning to end. Go home, lock the door, move all the furniture, put on a pair of headphones, close your eyes, and dance like you’ve never danced before. His upcoming autumn album tour is hitting eighteen cities and cannot be missed.
