TIPPER OF THE WEEK: TYLER DAMARA KELLY

This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we have Tyler Damara Kelly, writer for When The Horn Blows and Gigwise. Check out her tips below!

ANAIS

anaïs is the kind of musician who consistently transports you to a quite space inside your mind whenever you listen to her. Whether singing about political injustice, the power of being a woman or feelings of isolation; you are instantly captivated by her voice which edges on breathy whispers, to velveteen soulful notes, and honeyed angelic hiccupping. Whilst you can take the easy route and say that she is just a neo-soul artist; the plethora of styles that anaïs can delve into means that she is perfectly undefinable, and to pigeon-hole her, would be an incredible understatement of her talent.

ALASKALASKA

Moving into the summer months, there is a shift within some of us that calls out for music that you can dance to. ALASKALASKA’s recently released debut album The Dots’ kaleidoscopic fusion of disco, jazz and pop is already enough to get your feet shuffling, but as soon as the saxophone comes in, you’ve instantly got yourself a party.  South London is already known as a hotspot for music, and ALASKALASKA are a welcome addition to the long list of upcoming talent.

CHAPTER & VERSE

Chapter and Verse are a band with an empowering message of embracing life for all its good and bad, whilst spreading the idea of safe spaces for those who come to watch them. If you believe in the band, and in their message, you are a part of The New Breed. Chapter and Verse’s sound has many layers that mostly comes in the form of emotive alternative rock, and intense hard-hitting post-hardcore. With music being a form of escapism for many, it is really refreshing that there are musicians who are trying to build communities and spreading a message of positivity along the way.

LAURA MISCH

Laura Misch makes music to chill out to, and because she produces it all herself, there is a lot of experimentation within her sound. Using loop pedals and other synthesisers to create a base, Laura then either croons over the outcome or instead plays a moving saxophone solo. It is a beautiful demonstration of how you can make something outstanding, with the simplest of tools. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day, or wanting to zone out with a group of friends, Laura has a song for the occasion.

GREEN LUNG

If mind-bending guitar solos and doom-metal bass notes are your thing – look no further than Green Lung. With songs that feel like the unholy offering at a séance, Green Lung have the vocal capabilities of Black Sabbath mixed with the story telling of Iron Maiden. Just like their own hand-crafted speedball, the band offer a heavy dose of stoner and psychedelic rock, which makes for a wonderful out-of-body-experience. When you like your music on the heavier side, you can do no wrong with Green Lung.
