Described by Pitchfork as “one of the most innovative voices in British Music” Anna is a genre-crossing composer and producer whose work straddles the worlds of contemporary classical, art pop, electronica and experimental rock.
Her much-anticipated debut album, Varmints (released on Moshi Moshi Records in March 2016) received overwhelmingly positive critical response, garnering 4 and 5 star reviews across the board from the likes of The Wire, Sunday Times, Uncut, Q Magazine, The Line of Best Fit, DIY and the coveted Best New Music on Pitchfork. As well as being Loud & Quiet’s Album of the Year, Varmints also won the 2016 Scottish Album of the Year award.
Fresh from working on a recent commission as part of the BBC proms in July 2018 – her wider CV includes being Composer in Residence for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, a piece written for MRI scanner, soundtracking PRADA’s Spring/Summer 2015 campaign, symphonies created for nursery children, music for park benches in Hong Kong and sleep-pods in Singapore. Her body-percussion piece HandsFree received rave reviews from it’s performances at Southbank Centre, Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Centre, Utah Youth Symphony, the new Elbphilharmnie in Hamburg and even flash-mobbing the M6 motorway service station. She is also a regular presenter and guest on radio (Radio 3 and BBC 6Music) and television and her music is frequently broadcast on BBC 1, 2, 3, 4, & 6music as well as in films, installations and TV.
The residency with Anna, which will be open to emerging female* music creators and digital artists, will happen from 3rd – 7th September 2018 at eclectic artist studios Ampersand Inventions in Newcastle. This will be an opportunity to collaborate and create new work inspired by Anna’s unique and visually driven creative process.
Inspired by the idea of Micro/Macro, participants will be supported to explore how innovative musical and visual ideas can be developed by expansion of the smallest detail or deconstruction of the broadest concept. Both vocalists and instrumental musicians are invited to apply alongside digital artists who work inthe medium of film, animation or other visual art media.
The residency will culminate in a performance on Friday 7th September at Cobalt Studios in Newcastle. This forms the final installation of The Hexagon Experiment, part of the Great Exhibition of the North, a 6-part program which combines music, art and science in a celebration of women’s creativity.
This is a unique opportunity for emerging female music creators and digital artists from across the North East to work intensively with Anna to challenge their creativity against this innovative backdrop.
Applicants for the residency must be:
From or based in the North East of England
An emerging female* music creator OR
An emerging female* digital artist
* We use an inclusive definition of ‘women’ and ‘female’, welcoming participants who may identify as non-binary, cis-gendered, or trans.
