Overview

The International Artist Programme helps Northern artists access global opportunities through targeted investment and wraparound industry support. Unlike national programmes operating at scale, NMEO combines regional insight with tailored funding, practical guidance and industry connections to help artists grow audiences, build relationships and develop sustainable international careers.

What the Programme Supports

  • International showcase appearances (note that you will need to prove you have been invited to play).
  • Multi-date international headline or support tours (where dates are confirmed or in advanced stages).
  • Certain UK-based showcasing events – Specifically those featuring a demonstrable, substantial international delegate audience.

Eligible Costs

  • International travel (e.g., flights, trains, vehicle hire).
  • Accommodation and subsistence.
  • Visas, carnets, and international travel documentation.
  • Instrument, backline, and merchandise freight.
  • Core touring personnel (e.g., sound engineers, tour management).

Key Application Criteria

  • Regional Eligibility: Open to artists based in the North East, Tees Valley, or West Yorkshire.
  • Export Readiness: Applicants must demonstrate a strong domestic foundation, existing international interest, and a clear commercial rationale for targeting the market.

Confirmed Activity:

  • Showcases: You must hold an official written invitation from the event organisers.
  • Tours: Activity must be non-speculative, with dates either confirmed or at an advanced stage of confirmation.

Powered by Generator, the Northern Music Export Office was established through a partnership between between Mayoral Strategic and Combined Authorities from across the North of England with the intention of helping artists and music businesses from the region access national and international opportunities. At this time, these programmes are exclusively available to artists from the Tees Valley, West Yorkshire and North East Mayoral Strategic and Combined Authority areas.

Through a combination of investment, advocacy, industry connections and tailored support, NMEO helps Northern talent build sustainable careers while strengthening the wider regional music ecosystem. By taking a place-based approach, NMEO is able to respond to the specific strengths, opportunities and challenges of the region's music sector while ensuring cultural and economic benefits are retained within the North.
