Generator Live 2024

Generator Live 2024 wasn’t just another date in the diary. It was a moment that showed what happens when the North backs itself properly. From panels that pulled no punches to live sets that stopped us in our tracks, this year’s event proved that the region isn’t just part of the conversation - we’re leading it.

Across two packed days, we brought together venue owners, emerging artists, industry heads, journalists, fans and funders to talk about what’s really going on in music. And then we turned it up a notch with a full day of live music at Boiler Shop, showcasing the talent that makes the North East so unique.

At Assembly Rooms, Generator CEO Mick Ross opened the conference with a message that cut through. The North East isn’t an afterthought anymore. With the MOBOs heading to Newcastle and growing recognition from national bodies, we’re seeing real momentum. Now it’s about making that count.

Panel discussions tackled it al, from the pressures facing grassroots venues to how artists get paid, how to approach labels, and what a more inclusive industry could actually look like. It wasn’t theory. It was real-life experience, honest reflection, and practical advice. No egos. Just straight-talking insight from people who get it.

At Boiler Shop, the energy was electric. Rivkala opened with soul and sharp songwriting. Look Terrified brought all-out chaos in the best way. Sarah Johnsone held the room with her voice alone. Cortney Dixon reminded everyone why she’s one of the region’s most-loved performers. Finn Forste, backed by a full band delivered a set that felt like a proper arrival.

We didn’t stop there. NE-O, Eyeconic and Dan Swift showed the strength of our alt, rap and grime scenes. And then L Devine closed things out with a set that had everyone dancing, singing, and remembering why live music hits so hard.

Generator Live is about more than showcasing talent. It’s about building the structures that help that talent thrive. Creating pathways, not gatekeeping. Turning up the volume on underrepresented voices. And proving, again and again, that you don’t need to leave the North to make a name for yourself.
