Sonic Futures launches to supercharge Tees Valley’s music scene
A major new initiative is set to transform the music industry across Tees Valley. Sonic Futures – a multi-million-pound programme funded by Tees Valley Combined Authority and Arts Council England – officially launched on 6 September at The Georgian Theatre in Stockton.
Led by Generator and Tees Music Alliance, the programme will invest over £2 million into supporting local talent, live venues, recording studios and music education, with the goal of building a thriving, sustainable music ecosystem in the region.
The launch event brought together leading industry voices including Ben Houchen (Tees Valley Mayor), Joe Frankland (PRS Foundation), Austin Daboh (Atlantic Records UK), Yaw Owusu (Creative Consultant), and Nina Radojewski (AIM). The event also featured a live set from Middlesbrough artist Amelia Coburn, supported through the TVCA-funded Artists of the Year scheme.
Sonic Futures will provide:
Targeted funding and support for artists, bands and music professionals based in Tees Valley
New skills and development programmes across performance, production, business and events
A boost to the region’s live music infrastructure, including festivals, venues and recording spaces
Support for music businesses to connect with film, TV and gaming sectors
The programme is expected to generate £6 million for the local economy and create 120 new jobs over three years. A new Tees Valley Music Board, made up of local and national industry leaders, will oversee its delivery.
Generator CEO Mick Ross said:
“The North’s music scene is thriving. By taking a pan-regional approach and working closely with partners in Tees Valley, we can unlock new opportunities for local talent and strengthen the industry infrastructure for years to come.”
Paul Burns of Tees Music Alliance added:
“This level of investment is unprecedented for our sector. We’re excited to get started and help our local music industry develop and thrive.”
Sonic Futures is backed by PRS Foundation, Warner Music UK, PPL and other major players – offering a unique opportunity to position Tees Valley as a national leader for music innovation and creativity.
