A New Lowe for Radio One

All change at Radio One this month, with Zane Lowe (pictured) and Fearne Cotton both set to leave Radio One this year, riding off (separately) into the sunset.

Lowe will leave Radio 1 this March following more than a decade at the station, to take on a currently undisclosed role at Apple in the US- heavily rumoured to be a curation type role at Apple’s new Beats based streaming service.

Zane Lowe said: “I want to thank everyone at Radio 1 for their support and friendship. The station has allowed me to share incredible music with the country’s best music fans”.

The DJ’s weekday evening new music show will be takeover by Annie Mac, who started her career as a broadcast assistant on Lowe’s show.

Controller of BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra Ben Cooper said: “Annie has proven she is a great ambassador for new music, and I’m delighted that she’s bringing her passion and knowledge to young audiences across the week. I’d like to thank Zane for 12 wonderful years at Radio 1, and wish him and his family all the very best”.

In addition, Fearne Cotton will also be leaving Radio 1, with Clara Amfo the new host of the Live Lounge slot, presenting the weekday 10am-1pm show on the network from May.

Cotton said: “After much time and careful thought I have decided to leave Radio 1 after 10 amazing years. I have had the most incredible decade broadcasting on Radio 1, meeting wonderful people, helping break artists and watching live music from the world’s best. However it is now time for a new chapter”.

Although Lowe recently broadcast a new interview with Kanye West in which the rapper is reduced to tears, The Gen recommends reminiscing with this outstanding 2013 interview  in which West, amongst other things declares himself to be a “God”.
