TIPPER OF THE WEEK – ADAM WINCH-FURNESS

We continue to shine the spotlight the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we have Adam Winch-Furness, team assistant at BBC Introducing Sheffield. Check out his tips below.

The Howl and The Hum

If someone was to make a film about your life, I’m sure we’ve all thought about what music will make it onto the soundtrack. The Howl and the Hum made it onto mine, and I want it played right at the credits to open the floodgates for the audience watching. Why? Because their music makes you feel something. Their self-produced magic combined with the instrumentation from the band and Sam Griffiths’ warm yet powerful vocals means there is something truly special going on here. It also helps when the band’s debut single ‘Godmanchester Chinese Bridge’ is about a location just around the corner from my hometown of Cambridge. A real shock if The Howl and The Hum aren’t soaring high in 2018.

TYNI

Looking for a new queen of pop? Here’s your answer. TYNI is making unimaginable behind-the-scenes moves right now – she’s writing music in locations between L.A, London and Sheffield and releasing some super-strong material including ‘Cherry Trees’ and ‘Late Spring’. She has also worked with songwriters and producers such as Wayne Wilkins, MNEK and Charli XCX. Her track ‘Fighter’ has just been picked as the official anthem for Help Musicians UK’s support service Music Minds Matter. For me, she’s ready to take on the UK pop scene by storm.

Skinny Pelembe

Describing himself as ‘Afro-Tipped Soul’, Skinny Pelembe has knack of seeking out samples and grooves for his music that creates something beautiful. I knew there was something extra unique going on here when the track ‘I’ll Be On Your Mind’ was released. His choice of instrumentation keeps you on your toes, backed by wonderful production. He’s recently been picking up plays from both Huw Stephens’ on BBC Radio 1, Giles Peterson on BBC Radio 6 and different shows on BBC Radio 3. Make a note of this artist as he’s heading for a bright future.

Brooders

I have watched this band grow from their very first gig, and every time that I’ve seen since they’ve somehow found headspace to get better and better. A combination of sharp distorted guitars, colourful bass tones and punchy drum rhythms support lead singer Adam Bairstow’s growling vocals. They follow suit in the gritty scene of Leeds and would be a perfect fit to join the hall of DIY fame alongside Pulled Apart By Horses, Eagulls and Dinosaur Pile-Up. Having hit up a some new music UK festivals and toured the country a few times, Brooders are releasing their single ‘Lie’ with rising independent record label ‘Come Play With Me’ and it’s pretty tasty.

Before Breakfast

I was struggling to describe the genre of this band to some people, and then I released it’s because I’ve never heard something this unique before. Before Breakfast consists of a talented female-quartet with extremely powerful melodic hooks and harmonies. Made up of members that featured in some of Sheffield’s previous stronghold bands, these women aren’t afraid to tackle interesting topics about image through their lyrics that others daren’t. When playing live, audiences fall silent to listen to the mesmerising music that they write. Get stuck into this project so you can be the one who says ‘I heard this first’ to your friends.
