Captivating from start to end through picturesque storytelling and a gorgeous tone, Holly Macve is a brilliant choice for today’s tip.
Holly who is based in Brighton is actually a Yorkshire lass and like fellow singer and tearjerker songwriter Billie Marten, they both have a voice so pretty it’s to die for. Last Summer, Holly was spotted by Bella Union boss and industry legend Simon Raymonde who said her voice was “a rare gift”. Despite her song stating she doesn’t know where she’s going, it’s clear that she’s going on to big things this year.
The track itself paints a picture using the grandest of pianos and enough of a sniff of country guitar to make the song feel like its being sung from across the pond. Holly’s voice too has the maturity of the most veteran of country singers. Its soft in tone but has a beautiful deepness similar to Lana Del Rey.
Everything does seem to be shaping up well for Holly who has previously joined John Grant on tour as well as just concluding a run of shows with the excellent Villagers. She will be playing at End of the Road festival in September but if you can’t wait until then, she will be playing a show in London’s Old St.Pancras in June. And if that’s still too far away and you live in America, then make sure you check Holly out at SXSW or her run of American shows in March.
