TIPPER OF THE WEEK: DOYLE SMITH
This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.
Next up we’ve got Doyle Smith, editor of Hype Machine tastemaker Velvet Independent. He’s been helping to push the names of indie bands from all over the world for several years now; take a look at his tips below!
SAL DULU
An Irish producer, Sal Dulu is a really interesting guy to listen to. He’s changed his brand over the last year, taking his work a lot more seriously now, with a new solely piano based track called Xompulse, released towards the end of January. He’s got a serious knack for utilizing classical music and jazz when producing electronica which is a refreshing change of pace from all of the other electronica producers currently saturating the market.
DOS FLORIS
Hailing from London, Dos Floris is truly a secret gem that you’d love to keep to yourself, but her music needs to be shared with the world. Her LP ‘The Widowed Earth’ is arguably what started my journey into ‘weirder’ forms of electronic music. Her brand is almost like if somebody transformed all the classic fairy tales and stories from when you were a kid and mixed them with really suave, yet equally weird electronica. She’s got a new track coming out called ‘When Life Get’s You Down’ and it’s bound to be weird and brilliant.
CROWS
Crows are on of those bands that have been around for years, but never quite received the recognition that they should have. Finally, they’ve signed to Balley Records with their debut LP expected this month, with the first single ‘Chain Of Being’ having been released in January. This London band are proper gutsy rock that embrace punk energy, yet are a lot more palatable for indie rockers than their artwork would have you believe.
FAR CASPIAN
Over On Velvet. we listed these guys as our number one act to follow in 2019. They released an absolute anthem of a track called Let’s Go Outside last year, and that was enough to fully commit myself as a die hard fan. It’s not quite indie music per say, as the group prefer to label their music as ‘melanjolly’, capturing that essence of the summer that no one else is really doing right now. Blue with a tinge of orange is a good way to view Far Caspian as their music is as equally stunning as it is soul destroying. They’re undeniably ones to watch out for this year.
BROODERS
This Leeds based trio are utterly terrifying, yet you’ll be too caught up in their dirty riffs to run away. Their music will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on edge, with their gritty grunge. They just hosted Riff-fest at Leeds Lending Room and put on an amazing show, an absolute must watch to really let their music sink into you. Their newest track ‘Rinse & Repeat’ has recently come out and it’s a must for old school emo-grunge fans.
