NE HOT SEAT: JACKLYN
We’re back with our artist insight feature ‘NE Hot Seat’ – where we sit down with some of the North East’s brightest talent on a monthly basis, shine a spotlight on their latest work and find out what they have planned next.
Next up we have Newcastle based techno DJ/Producer Jacklyn. Jacklyn reigns in on the cleaner corners of oscillation, navigating through her collection of puristic techno styles. She has taken influence from dance music’s elite such as wizard Jeff Mills with galloping atmospheric rhythm. Jacklyns self-released productions have gained traction among several artists with most of her tracks including pumelling drums across mesmeric spoken samples. Her mixes on Bandcamp and live performances are a clear reflection of why she has earned such an organic growth in the scene over recent months.
Read on for our chat with Jacklyn about her influences as an artist and what they have coming up in 2023!
Welcome to NE HOT SEAT Jacklyn, thanks for having a chat with us! Can you refresh our memories about your journey in the music industry so far?
Thank you for having me! It’s been a mad journey so far from self-releasing my first EP Spark last year and playing at Tresor Berlin, to being included in DJ Mag’s emerging artist spotlight and supporting the Wizard Jeff Mills at World Headquarters. I’ve had an incredible time on my musical journey so far.
What first got you into music production?
I had always been interested in electronic music however I never had the benefit of music lessons nor the budget to pursue my passion. So, when I finally decided to engage in my musical path, I bought a cheap synth and some recording gear which was just enough to get me going. It was sort of like a hobby, I’d spend hours and hours watching music production tutorials on Youtube and making tracks. Until one day one of my tracks that I had randomly put on Soundcloud got signed onto a label and played on BBC1 Radio. That gave me a lot more confidence and from there I knew I was capable of doing so much more.
It’s been amazing to see you play shows in the UK and beyond. How have you found breaking into the European circuit so far?
So far, it’s amazing and it’s been my favourite thing to do now which is travelling to different countries and sharing the decks with some International DJ’s. I think the most important thing for me is being put on nights which fit my musical genre even if that means I’d have to travel across the globe for it.
Who have been your main influences when it comes to DJing and production?
My massive influence in terms of Djing would be Ok Williams, an impressive DJ who brings a lot of intensity and fun to the dancefloor. I had the opportunity to support her at a Ghetec night at Cobalt Studios last year and she literally blew my mind.
A massive influence in terms of production would be Maxx Rossi. He has been in the game over 15 years constantly producing head-banging techno, which has always topped off the techno charts. There’s something about his tracks which will always remind us of where techno originally comes from.
From self-releases to label releases, we really admire your level of independence with your music. Is there any advice you would give to up-and-coming producers?
As long as you love it, you’ve got it! Keep learning and keep growing but most importantly have confidence in yourself. The right people will play your music, book you and push you in the right direction.
We know you already have a busy year ahead with bookings! What else can we expect from you this year?
I’m working on an EP at the moment but before the lead up I’m just out there randomly dropping tracks on Bandcamp for any ears who would like to listen to something new and authentic.
As an integral part of Newcastle’s pool of talent in underground music, would you like to give a shoutout to any artists, DJs and collectives in the North East?
So many names but I’d like to give a shout out to Jon Corbil (Slacks) Melba, Bunney, Boo, Henry Dux, Diz, Lurch, Annie Marron, Dark Mode, El Chetcuti, Ben Prophet, Weston (Shy Bairns), M Data, Becky Woodcock & Macca (Music Sphere), DJ ABG (Bend & Shake), Ben OA Sayer <3
Lots of love
Jacklyn
