Next Up x Nrthrn Baby

We’ve teamed up with Newcastle-based music and culture agency Nrthrn Baby to launch a new two-year programme, supported by the Youth Music Catalyser Fund, spotlighting emerging artists working in Rap, R&B, Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, and Grime.

Championing underrepresented sounds from the North East

Next Up is all about developing talent that doesn’t always get a seat at the table – putting artist growth, collaboration, and creative freedom at the centre.

Applications for our first cohort are open now. Find out more below and register your interest here.

No gatekeeping. Just real support, start to finish.

Why this matters

The North East’s music scene is rich and diverse, but some genres and communities still aren’t getting the support they deserve. Following a successful pilot in June 2024, we knew we needed to do more – and do it properly. That’s where this partnership comes in.

Together with Nrthrn Baby, we’re creating space for artists from underrepresented backgrounds and genres to connect, collaborate, and grow.

What’s happening

Over two years, the programme will offer:

  • Four songwriting camps (two per year) designed to support artists in developing new work
  • Workshops and creative coaching, including body movement and performance skills
  • Professional studio time and opportunities to showcase the final work

Who it’s for

This is for North East-based artists making Rap, R&B, Hip-Hop, Grime or Afrobeats. We’re especially keen to hear from artists from the Global Majority or communities underrepresented in the region’s music industry.

Each camp will work with a maximum of five artists to make sure the support is personalised and focused.
