HER’S
From the start, it’s easy to compare the instrumentals of Her’s ‘Dorothy‘ to The Smiths (I tested this theory by listening to a bunch of Smiths tracks after this one – a purely scientific approach). The guitar line has a distinct eighties flair, and you’re waiting for Morrissey to begin any minute. Just in time, however, a good thing happens: Morrissey doesn’t join the party. Instead, listeners are treated to the rich and substantially deeper vocals of Stephen Fitzpatrick, one half of this Liverpool duo.
That’s about where the similarities end. They refer to themselves as “jangle-pop,” and I never thought that would be a term that accurately describes anything, but here we are. ‘Dorothy‘ is a friendly, dreamy reminder that not all songs with sad lyrics need to be mopey. They can get your feet tapping with an energetic bass line, tinny drums, and a guitar riff that will make you want to put on your best leg warmers.
Thanks, Her’s, for the summery angst we all need.
