THE FLIGHT

We begin our tipping point musings today on a slightly morose tone, with a feature on a track styled as a modern re-telling of the folk song, ‘Pretty Polly’. For those of you unfamiliar with the tale, ‘Pretty Polly’ is a murder ballad, telling of a young woman tempted away from home into a forest where she is killed and buried in a shallow grave. Morbid stuff, however ‘The Hangman’ is also The Flight’s debut track, for their similarly titled debut EP, and it’s a very striking entrance that is sure to last long in the memory.

Composed as a duo, The Flight is made up of Joe Henson and Alexis Smith. Both Henson and Smith are experienced producers, having written and produced for a plethora of established names within the music industry. This background is soon apparently obvious in a first listen to ‘The Hangman’, as the production values are near flawless, and the tale is told with a great sense of engagement and an overwhelming beauty. A particularly driving track, ‘The Hangman’ deals with it’s subject matter in a manner which is replicated in it’s instrumentation, often with periods of echoing, diminishing vocals, and a minimalist approach which resonates deeply.

With an album no doubt out later this year, The Flight are certainly ones to watch in 2013.
