Chamber Urges NE MPs To Vote In Favour Of Heathrow Expansion

The importance of expanding Heathrow to ensure regional businesses’ connections to the rest of the world was spelt out to North East MPs by James Ramsbotham, chief executive, North East England Chamber of Commerce.

In a detailed letter to all 29 MPs, in advance of the Government’s Airports National Policy Statement (NPS) this month, he said: “Our region is rightly proud of its international business links. Our exporters sell more than anywhere else in the country and we are home to some of the most iconic brands in the world. Our vision for North East England is a region which continually grows its exports and sees ever more businesses engaging in international trade.

“We also aspire to build on our global connections; continuing to be a region that is open and welcoming to visitors and one that its uninhibited by policy decisions that limit our international access.  Expansion of Heathrow is an essential foundation upon which this ambition can be built.”

James Ramsbotham also stressed that the Government’s preferred scheme, the new Heathrow Northwest Runway, represents the best option for expanding airport capacity in the south-east of England and will result in the maximum benefit to North East England and the whole of the UK.

His letter also set out the importance of the Heathrow hub for regional exporters who work hard around the world to promote North East England’s businesses and the opportunities to invest in the region.

We also aspire to build on our global connections; continuing to be a region that is open and welcoming to visitors and one that its uninhibited by policy decisions that limit our international access.  Expansion of Heathrow is an essential foundation upon which this ambition can be built.
