TIPPER OF THE WEEK: MELISSA SVENSEN

We continue to shine the spotlight the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we have Melissa Svensen, editor at Gigslutz. Alongside the site, she’s Station Manager at Manchester Met’s student radio station, Hive, as well as hosting a weekly show championing the best in new music. Discover some of the best new artists and bands around right now in Melissa’s tips below.

KASHMERE

Having already made a name for themselves in Manchester, Stockport natives Kashmere are well on their way to take over the rest of the world. With a repertoire of hugely catchy indie-pop anthems that work just as well for a live sing-a-long as they do being played full volume while you’re dancing around your room, Kashmere are ones to keep an eye on.

ISAAC WADDINGTON

Though something slightly different for me, Isaac Waddington had me smitten immediately. With his debut single, ‘Nothing’s Changed’ out earlier this year, Isaac emerged into the scene a fully formed artist, and while he set the bar high for himself, I’ve no doubt whatever’s coming next will be just as captivating.

CALPURNIA

While Calpurnia boast Finn Wolfhard (AKA Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things) as their frontman, it would be wrong to judge them solely (if it all) on that fact. What they can be judged on, however, is just how good they are. In equal parts fuzzy and groovy, Calpurnia are one of the most exciting bands I’ve heard in a long time.

PLASTIC PEOPLE

Bursting on to the scene last year with their unique brand of groove-rock, Plastic People are one of the enticing bands of the moment. With their recent EP Gripping Reality managing to be both danceable and swaggeringly cool.

SAM VANCE-LAW

Sam Vance-Law won my heart with ‘Gayby’ earlier this year, ahead of the release of his debut album. Witty, charming, but with an important social commentary at the base of what he does, Sam blends pop sensibilities with theatrical, operatic influences to create something so, so special.
