TIPPER OF THE WEEK: LAURA FREYALDENHOVEN

This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we have Laura Freyaldenhoven, freelance writer for Dork, When The Horn Blows and Spotlight Music UK. Check out all Laura’s picks below!

DEVON

Devon is a singer/songwriter/producer based in the Forest of Dean. Just like his job description, his music is pretty eclectic ranging from high energy indie rock like most recent single “I DON’T WANT 2 B UR FRIEND” to more catchy indie pop vibes in “Daydreaming”. Being influenced by anything and everything, Devon is hard to put into a box and firmly seal shut, but without fail, all of his songs are impeccably produced. At only 20, he clearly knows what he’s doing and it’s only a matter of time until he skyrockets.

FEVER DAYS

Hailing from Newcastle, Fever Days are most definitely a local treasure. I saw them open for Spring King (rip) my first weekend in Newcastle and have been hooked ever since. There is something distinctively addictive to their sound, especially their newer material that has somewhat of an Easy Life tone to it. Dreamy, synthy, alt-pop with an undeniable edge; music to dance to, music to sing along to, music that’s very hard not to vibe with.

LIO

LIO are a band for fans of Florence and the Machine and Daughter, their music is best described as enchanting. Lead-singer Leonie pulls you in with her intoxicating vocals and firmly keeps you in her grasp until the very last song. I’m not a religious person but watching them perform their ambient, mellow indie pop is almost spiritual. Maybe you’ve had times where listening to an artist made you feel like crying purely because music is such a beautiful, magical thing, maybe that’s just me being weird, but that’s what LIO is to me: They remind me why I do what I do.

BIIG PIIG

Biig Piig is certainly an unusual name for an artist but it’s the perfect fit for a girl as unusual as Jess. Born in Ireland, she spent her childhood in Spain and late adolescence in London. All three cultures influence her music, most notably when she decides to add a verse in Spanish because what she has to say is too precious, too vulnerable to say in English. Her music is soothing, soulful RnB addressing issues and lessons she had to learn growing up, often the hard way. Biig Piig is raw, honest and most of all inspiring.

MONTY TAFT

Monty Taft is a very recent addition to my playlists. He has one of those voices that quite literally demand to be heard, raw and a pure force of nature, James Bay ca 2015. You physically cannot listen away and you don’t want to either. There’s no question that he could easily keep up with the likes of Lewis Capaldi and Sam Fender, both lyrically and vocally. Actually, Monty is a triple threat: his stage presence is equally as captivating as his music that blends Folk, Pop and Indie Rock. But even if you don’t want to compare him to the top players just yet, he is most definitely an exciting young talent to look out for.
