TIPPER OF THE WEEK: LUKE SCANLAN
This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.
Next up we have Luke Scanlan, festival organiser for DeebsDay as well as writer for the likes of GIGsoup, Gigslutz and Gigwise and podcaster for Big Smoke Weekly. Check out Luke’s picks below!
ASH BATES
Shropshire-based Ash Bates is one of my favourite up and coming songwriters out there, and dear friend! His voice has such a captivating purity that rides along the path of falling in love and heartbreak. Teamed with beautifully-layered guitars – he is a force to be reckoned with. With just 2 single releases to date – expect big things!
CALVA LOUISE
These guys landed in the UK a few years back, from Venezuela. They love the British music scene and with influences from here and home, they have carved out an amazing sound, spearheaded by the fierce yet lovely Jess Allanic. Their debut album, ‘Rhinoceros’ came out back in January. Since then, the band have grown to create songs that speak for their true selves…it’s synth and guitar ramped-up to dangerous levels!
FUZZY SUN
Friends of Blossoms, these Stockport beauties have a sound that harks back to synth-rich pop of the 80s. They have had a busy year touring and are due for big things next year. ‘I Ain’t Right’ is possibly my track of the year. If you want a smile – watch frontman Kyle Ross boogie his way down a Stockport street to this pop masterpiece.
GURU
This Brighton outfit are riding the wave of post-punk glory that has swept the UK Alternative scene this year. After a few single releases this year, they are ready to grab 2020 by the horns. If you need a beast of a tune to give you that kick of energy in this mad Christmas period – look no further that ‘Don’t Talk’ – it’s a full-throttle demon of a tune!
TALK SHOW
In the same post-punk mould, Talk Show are one of the best live bands I’ve seen this year. Their shows at The Lexington in London and NBHD Festival in Manchester blew me away. Lead singer Harrison Swann has an energy that both terrifies and sucks you in. The level of power these guys maintain throughout a set is mind-blowing.
