TIPPER OF THE WEEK: PAUL CARR

This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we’ve got Paul Carr, associate editor and writer for Chicago based PopMatters (although he is very much from Exeter). A teacher by trade, Paul also writes a fortnightly column called “Brits In Hot Weather” for the site which showcases the best new British artists. Check out his tips below.

TED JASPER

There’s a steady buzz growing around London based house DJ and producer, Ted Jasper. Last year he released his, One Day EP which combined his love of house, jazz and hip-hop all sprinkled with a little Afrobeat. His new single, “Back For More” represents something more that just another track for Jasper. This is the first time he’s felt confident enough in his voice and in the message, to use his own vocals to successfully articulate what he wants to say. Opening with soulful, jazz chords, quickly gliding into a clipped rolling beat, “Back For More” is a compelling mix of hip-hop, downtempo house and jazz.

CC HONEYMOON

After years eschewing the spotlight, CC Honeymoon (aka Asher Preston) is striking out on his own on material he writes, plays and records himself. The result is achingly raw, dark synth pop complete with tremoring synths, rumbling atmospherics and murky beats. Thematically, Preston drops the listener straight into his intensely personal, internal dialogues which he manages to weave into arresting and catchy songs .

MODEL MAN

Every so often, electronic music can surprise you by seemingly tapping directly into the soul. Although it’s origins are artificial, it has the ability to echo genuine emotional experiences – often by combining the organic and the synthetic. In the case of Model Man (aka brothers Rob and Mark Brandon), their heartfelt, often profoundly beautiful electronic music, features the piano as its beating heart with all the arterial electronics and ventricular beats coursing from it.

PETER IBBETSON

If you’ve seen DJ and producer George Fitzgerald live recently (and you really should), you’ll probably have seen South London multi-instrumentalist and fellow producer Peter Ibbetson adding sonic textures and beats as a member of Fitzgerald’s live band. Although Ibbetson’s EP, Rivals came out last October, his intelligent, impeccably layered electronic music deserves to be heard. With a slew of remixes and the promise of new material, this year promises to be a big one for him.

ICE BATHS

South London post-punk band, Ice Baths are releasing their forthcoming, Decadent Sprinter EP at the end of the month and if the singles are anything to go by, it’s going to be something very special indeed. “Auster” is the highlight for me so far. It’s an agitated, claustrophobic post-punk song full of of ringing guitars and and jittery bass. It’s a song that beckons you over to then envelop you in its shadow.
