TIPPER OF THE WEEK: SAM MEAGHAN

We continue to shine the spotlight the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.

Next up we have Sam Meaghan who works primarily for Modern Sky UK in the role of A&R as well as occupying the managerial positions for rising talents SPINN and SPQR. Dig in and find out more about Sam’s tips below.

SOPHIE MORGAN

When I first started working in A&R one of the first things i’d do every Monday is trawl through new music playlists on the radio. One in particular was always Charlie Ashcroft’s Audition Show on Amazing Radio. One week last summer, I was going through the playlist and came across this beautiful rework of The Waterboys track’, ‘Whole Of The Moon’. Sophie Morgan was the artist and she has been nothing but perfect listening for happy, sad, boring, and fun days. Sophie’s latest EP, ‘Sons & Daughters’, is out now. The title track is particularly stunning.

HANNAH’S LITTLE SISTER

In Liverpool we currently have a new scene forming. It’s this convoluted group of art-school kids, local roughions, and some of the stranger DIY cats that have been knocking about the scene for a while. They’ve all joined forces to the extent where everyone seems to be supporting one another. Up steps Hannah’s Little Sister. I first saw these when they supported Plaza in the basement of some really expensive bar in the business sector. Wrong place right time. ‘20’, is their debut offering. Sounds like a messed up slacker version of fellow scenester, Zuzu. Boss.

RETRO VIDEO CLUB

Scotland is a complete powerhouse for absolute bangers of late. Every trip up is a new music discovery, every band coming out of the scene is like what English bands do, but 10 times better. Better yet, everything is often cheaper. Retro Video Club make the sort of music that isn’t reinventing the wheel, but is still hard to get right. Clearly with some great discipline involved, the band have managed to nail the art of chorus writing. ‘Chemistry’, is boss.

THE HUBBARDS

Fairly fresh from the ever trustworthy Hull music scene come The Hubbards. Sounding like a more up-to-date version of The Shins, they have this great way of leading with a pop-front but getting the cool kids credibility on their side. Their track, ‘That’s Not Right’, couldn’t be anymore, well, right.

BAKAR

Probably not something I’d normally go for but Bakar is literally everything that’s great about music from London when it’s done right. Every successful London artist has made the most of all the different cultures in such condensed places that you end up with stuff like this, and it’s amazing. Bakar fuses just about everything in contemporary music to get his sound and it’s brilliant. I’m all in for All In…
