BONZAI

As winter finally starts to bite here in the UK and ice, snow and frozen toes become the norm, we need something to thaw us out, warm us up and get us going again. Step forward Bonzai who has just the thing with the positively molten ‘Doses’.

A graduate of the British and Irish Modern Music Institute and former vocalist for Mura Masa, Bonzai calls her style “twisted R&B” and we can see why. The electronics coil around the beats like a boa constrictor, squeezing tighter until ‘Doses’ pops with excitement and explodes into this incredible colourful sound.

Jittery like Grace Mitchell and bombastic like Elliphant, ‘Doses’ is a machine gun firing mix of ideas, styles and oh so infectious beats. It skips, flits, booms and blasts as your body reacts and moves. Shot after shot hits you, leaving you reeling and gasping for breath as this relentless, remarkable track keeps coming back for more. A pounding dark beat gives way to an IED blast of sharp digital rhythms which melts into soulful soothing synths and Bonzai’s rich vocal.

Taken from her debut EP, Royah, it’s compulsive, inventive and red hot. Is it just us, or is it getting really warm in here?
