Chart Changes, Friday Feeling
The Official Chart Show broadcast on Radio One is set to move to Fridays in line with the recently announced new music global release day.
The move will take place from July, suggesting that is when the new world order of new release Fridays will also kick in, despite misgivings from certain corners of the industry including Beggars Boss Martin Mills.
Starting off with some David ‘no third term for me’ Cameron style stating the obvious, Controller of BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra Ben Cooper said: “The days of recording your favourite songs from the chart onto cassette are long gone and Radio 1 now operates in an instant digital world. So when the global release date changes to a Friday we will also move The Official Chart, continuing our commitment to stay relevant to young music fans of today and tomorrow”.
Steady on Agent Cooper, you’ve only just thrown streaming into the mix very recently- The Gen is not sure that represents a fully instant digital world. The owls are not what they seem.
The countdown of the 40 best-selling and most streamed singles in the UK will take place on Greg James’ show from 4-6pm on Fridays from this summer.
Official Charts Company Chief Executive Martin Talbot added: “This is an exciting new era for the Official Singles Chart – following the integration of streams, with the move to a new, more high profile slot. BBC Radio 1 has been the home of the UK’s Official Singles Chart for more than 40 years and we are delighted that they are as excited about future plans for the chart as we are”.
