DARKLY

‘Touch’ starts with a nice bit of minimalist glitchcore, but when the vocals introduce themselves it becomes clear that Tom Butler (for it is he that is the brains, brawn and voice behind Darkly) has a voice that is an exact mix of Bastille‘s breathy emoting and Bono‘s reach-for-the-stars optimism. I’ll leave it to the reader to decide on the merits of such a combination.

The track really kicks in with the introduction of a clever piece of reversed electric guitar but at heart this is a pop song, the central refrain of “Tie me down, hold me now, all I need is your touch” encapsulating the yearning love song intertwined within the keening electronica. Just two songs in, Darkly may well have hit on a winning formula here – just the ticket for anyone looking for a bit of home counties electro-pop.
