Death Of A Ladies Man
Music industry tributes to Leonard Cohen have been pouring in since the singer’s death was confirmed at the end of a week that everyone thought couldn’t get much darker or stranger.
Cohen died aged 82 after releasing a new album, You Want It Darker, last month.
Cohen’s death was announced in a Facebook post last Friday (11th November) that stated: “It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries”.
Sony/ATV Music Publishing subsequently issued a statement: “Sony/ATV is deeply saddened by the passing of Leonard Cohen, a poet in the truest sense and someone whose treasure of songs we are proud to have represented over many years. He has been a unique and positive influence for six decades and it says everything about the enduring power of his music that just weeks before his death a brand new album by him was topping charts around the world”.
Artists including Arcade Fire singer Win Butler, Paloma Faith, Frank Turner and Regina Spektorhave all paid their respects on social media.
The Gen suggests that you don’t bother reading those but simply sit back and put Songs of Love and Hate on. Or Songs of Leonard Cohen. Or New Skin for the Old Ceremony. Or The Future (In fact, definitely The Future). Or any number of other classics the Canadian songwriter, poet and performer created during his time on earth.
RIP Field Commander Cohen.
