Fabric Closes Following Deaths

World famous London nightclub Fabric has closed indefinitely pending a licensing review in the aftermath of two drug related deaths at the venue.

Two 18-year old men have passed away at the venue in recent months. One died after falling ill at the club on June 25th, while a second collapsed outside the venue on August 6th.

At the end of last week, it was announced that the club would be closed for the weekend, as police launched an inquiry into the deaths.

Islington Council has now suspended Fabric’s license indefinitely, pending a review in 28 days to decide if and when it will re-open.

A statement issued by the Metropolitan Police on Friday 12th August said: “Due to concerns about serious crime associated with fabric nightclub, Islington police made an application to Islington Council for a summary review of the nightclub’s license, on 10th August. As a result, the Licensing Sub Committee have decided to suspend the license as an interim measure, pending a full review hearing”.

It continued: “Officers felt the need to act due to concerns about the safety of those attending the club because of the supply of class A drugs in the venue and the recent deaths of two young men linked to the club. London has a world renowned night-time economy and people should be able to enjoy it safely, without concerns of serious crime. The Met is committed to fully playing its part in keeping people safe”.

Last year, Fabric successfully fended off attempts by the Council to impose stringent security measures, including the use of sniffer dogs and ID scanning on entry.

As reported by Music Week, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has responded to calls from prominent figures within the dance community calling on local authorities to protect the future of the club.
