Sheeran Smashes Spotify Records

Ed Sheeran (pictured) has broken every Spotify record under the sun- first setting a new record for one-day streams, then breaking his own record and dominating the Spotify global charts, occupying numbers one and two with two new tracks.

Sheeran returned with new tracks ‘Shape of You and ‘Castle on the Hill’ on Friday last week (6thJan) after casually announcing in a video that new music was coming.

‘Shape of You’, definitely the pop banger of the two, racked up 6.13m Spotify streams on release day – a 29% increase on One Direction’s previous one-day record.

Sheeran’s two comeback singles went on to reach more than 25.8 million global Spotify streams in 48 hours, and its accompanying lyric videos enjoyed more than 10 million combined hits on YouTube in the first 24 hours. Sheeran went on to break the all time Spotify record three times in four days.

The new songs are slated to appear on Sheeran’s third album ÷, (pronounced “divide.”), with a release date for the album yet to be announced.
