Spotify: Boys of Summer

Spotify has revealed its most streamed tracks of the summer, with Calvin Harris track ‘Summer’ topping the list globally. This makes The Gen yearn for the onset of autumn and adds weight to what Sid Vicious said many years ago about the man on the street.

‘Summer’ was streamed almost 160 times and Harris has become the first British solo artist to be streamed more than a billion times on Spotify, earning an estimated $7m in the process.

So all of those guilty pleasure little clicks may feel harmless but just be aware that you are contributing to now perma tanned Dumfries lad Harris quaffing endless quail eggs in LA whilst many artists struggle to conjure up a bowl of pea soup with their pea sized streaming royalties.

Angela Watts, VP Communications at Spotify, said: “It’s fitting to have Summer by Calvin Harris as the soundtrack to the season around the world (is it really the same season globally?). It’s a perfect party anthem and worthy of taking the streaming crown”.

The global top five also featured Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea, Magic!, Iggy Azalea and Jason Derulo ft. Snoop Dogg, with Sam Smith and Coldplay also making the top ten.

In the UK, Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sing’ was the most-streamed track followed by Mr. Probz, Sam Smith, George Ezra and you guessed it…Calvin Harris.

Spotify also announced its most ‘viral’ songs of the summer, which takes into account the number of social shares alongside streams. Alt-J topped the list, with three of their new songs all making the Top five. Other so called viral hits included Caribou, Deadmau5 and of course, Mike Oldfield.
