TIPPER OF THE WEEK – CAL CASHIN
We continue to shine the spotlight the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.
Next up we Cal Cashin, music writer for Fred Perry, The Quietus, CLASH, So Young and Loud and Quiet. As well as this, he’s also preparing to release the first issue of his own magazine, See You Mate (Yeah, See You Mate).
Honkies
Honkies are a band from South East London that make synth-infused honky-tonkin’ garage rock. Their music has a mixture of intensity and playfulness that’s hard to beat, a juxtaposition of stabby synth intensity and cowboy bravado.
Drug Store Romeos
Another band I’ve fallen in love with through seeing ‘em live a bunch of times, they’re a Basingstoke three-piece that have brewed their own strange strand of slowcore. Having supported the likes of Shame and Sorry, they’re another one without any proper releases out yet, but definitely one to catch live.
Peeping Drexels
They’re Peckham natives that have this really raucous garage rock sound. A lotta influence from Fat Whites, Country Teasers, their music is really vulgar, and their live shows are really intense. They also put on a lot of shows in and around Brixton so props to them for that.
Warmduscher
A collaboration between Saul and Jack of Fat Whites, Ben from Childhood and Clams and Little Whiskers of Paranoid London, Warmdsucher make gnarly phantom garage rock in the style of Beefheart, The Monks and The Fall. Bloodthirsty bunch, they sound like they’d take a bite out of you without even being particularly hungry. They’ve got a record called Whale City coming out June 1st and it’s definitely going to be the album of the year.
Go Chi Minh
Coming from the commuter town of Epsom, Go Chi Minh are one of the strangest new bands about. A band that sound like a cross of Country Teasers and Butthole Surfers, their ugly sense of humour is juxtaposed by wacky guitar lines and synthesisers that whizz and fizz like nothing else on this earth.
