TOP TIPS FOR 2019: RIANNE THOMPSON
We’re back and we’re ready for a whole new year of spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK.
Next up we’ve got Rianne Thompson, presenter at Amazing Radio and team assistant for BBC Introducing Teesside. Delve into Rianne’s top tips for the next twelve months below.
YOWL
The five piece from South London caught my attention early last year with their track Warm (In The Soft White Fire of Modern Living) and ever since then I’ve kept a close eye and ear on what they have been up to. Their most recent single John The Collector is a well written tale about a man who tries to open up a little more and realises the only way he can do this is to cut off his pals heads so he can tell them all about his deepest darkest fears. The lead singer Gabriel Bryde draws you in with a gritty/melancholy tone, reminding me of The Pixies who are one of my all-time favourite bands. It’s exciting to know that this is just the beginning for YOWL and I can’t wait to hear more from them.
LILY MOORE
Lily Moore is a singer-songwriter from Brighton. Not only can she belt out a ballad, her smoky and soulful voice reminds many of a style similar to Amy Winehouse. She released her debut EP Not That Special back in April of last year, which reflects on adolescence and romance. Moore also toured with the likes of George Ezra, Tom Grennan and James Bay in 2018 which isn’t such a shabby place to start! When she played in session on my Amazing Radio show last year I felt like I had witnessed something rather special. I strongly recommend you go and check out her tracks I Will Never Be and Do This For Me as both contain honest lyrics and outstanding vocals.
HEAVY LUNGS
The Bristol based punks formed back in spring of 2017, since then they have released their EP Abstract Thoughts, hit the road with IDLES on their sold out UK tour late last year and released a split 7” single with them too. Heavy Lungs are that band who will spend more time on stage than in the studio because that is where their music really comes to life. I’d recommend you go and check out their new single Jealous released via Balley Records (who are also GREAT).
WALT DISCO
Walt Disco are my wild card for 2019. I’ve only heard a few of their singles most recently –Drowning In Your Velvet Bed, a track which tears it’s self apart whilst a saxophone winds through the middle section. It leans towards the post-punk category and that is when I really started paying more attention to what these guys were doing. Earlier this week I heard their latest track My Pop Sensibilities and it was love at first listen, an ode to the 80s perhaps with a new-wave feel. And for the first time in a long time I heard vocals that really made me sit up and listen (go check it out). Do not underestimate this Glaswegian band, I think they’ve got a lot more up their sleeves for 2019.
