TIPPER OF THE WEEK: ELLI CHAPPELHOW
This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.
Next up we have Elli Chappelhow, writer at Gigwise, alongside her degree studying Music Marketing and Communications at UCA. Check out Elli’s tips below!
FATBERG
In their own words, Fatberg’s tunes are ‘Drain blockin’ rock n’ roll’. Much like wet wipes and congealed cooking oil, this band’s song will be sure to stick in your brain. Sounding like it’s been plucked from a Clash unheard demo, this blistering track is a very exciting taste of what’s to come from the SE London lads – a debut EP is imminent, so keep your eyes peeled. I’ve heard they put on one hell of a gig, too…
THE SLAUGHTER HOUSE BAND
This is a vein-bulging debut from this Brighton band who have a very exciting few months ahead, with UK and European shows in the pipeline. Bluesy licks fuse with a chaotically cathartic garage rocky sound that will rock your socks off. It’s a name that you will definitely be hearing increasingly more, so strap in for the ride.
ROXY GIRLS
The kind of sounds you’d expect if Omni got off with Parquet Courts, in the presence of Wire. Agitated, angular guitars combine with buzzsaw riffs to make for a brilliantly squally post-punk sound. The rip-roaring tracks are tightly wound – I saw Roxy Girls at Sebright Arms a couple of weeks ago, where they flew through the set at a thrilling pace and before I knew it, a 30 minute set was over just as soon as it started. These Sunderland upstarts have just released a mini-album ‘A Poverty Of Attention’, and it’s really worth a listen.
LAZARUS KANE
A Talking-Heads-esque bass line introduces this infectiously groovy number from newcomer Lazarus Kane, who has stirred things up with the intriguing word-of-mouth fervour around his live shows. It’s a great track to strut down your high street to – tried and tested!
FOOTBALL FC
On this massive track, a destructive, snarling industrial bass line grumbles along while guitars whirr away unforgivingly, and shrieking synths fill up every ounce left of space in your brain. They’ve only just had their one year anniversary as a band, so by the sounds of this track the Bristolians will only get better as time passes…
