TIPPER OF THE WEEK: MATT HARVEY
This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.
Next up we have Matt Harvey, director at artist and producer management company Paperhouse Music that represent bands Broken Hands, Dolls & Smoke Fairies amongst others + talented producer/mixers Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Pixies, Ghost) & Kristofer Harris (Belle & Sebastian, Ghostpoet, Indoor Pets). Check out his tips below!
HONEY LUNG
I first heard Honey Lung’s track “Something” on a Spotify playlist one Saturday morning a couple of years ago, absolutely loved it, had it on repeat all day long & saw that they had a show that night in Harrow North West London (not exactly a hot spot of the London music scene), bit random but got in the car and drove up there still listening to the track, thankfully they played it! About 40/50 watching that night and they were honestly brilliant. A few line-up changes and dramas later they went out to SXSW earlier in the year and just released a vinyl of early recordings. Can’t wait for the full LP, or for ‘Something’ to be back available online(!) proper band.
WORKING MEN’S CLUB
When your press picture looks like The Smiths outside Salford Lads Club you’re not going to fail but get my attention. I can’t help it, I think it’s in-built. But this band really deliver and offer so so much potential, brilliant guitar melodies much like the forementioned fellow northerners. Shows were packed at The Great Escape, the buzz is definitely starting & there’s a lovely 7″ red vinyl out at the moment.
HEAVY HEART
These guys have been on the radar and churning out quality tracks for some time now and starting to get the press and attention they deserve. The most recent tracks have been mixed by Gabe from Soccer Mummy. The Line Of Best Fit described their sound as a “dreamy tapestry of sadness” … now doesn’t that sound wonderful?!
GOODNIGHT LOUISA
“Bettys got her head in the oven again” with that opening lyric to a debut single I defy you to not listen to ‘Hollow God’ from Edinburgh’s Goodnight Louisa. Do need to declare an interest here, Louise has been working in studio with one of our guys Kristofer Harris on this but it is so strong I couldn’t not list it, they’ve made something that’ll stop you in your tracks.
FEET
Literally bonkers but in the best sense of the word and really, really good at doing it too ending them up somewhere between Blur, Pulp and Gang Of Four. The live shows are frantic, the songs are mad and I really like that they’re not just waiting around for a deal or playing any sort of music industry game, they’re just getting on with it and building a following like a real band used to (and should!). Get in a van, play gigs, go to the studio, repeat.
