COUSIN MARNIE
The latest track to drop from London vocalist Cousin Marnie is a thrilling reworking of the Carter Family classic ‘You’ve Been Fooling Me Baby’. It’s an interesting, perhaps bold, step to take on a track so ingrained in its folk roots, but Cousin Marnie pulls it off with ease. Gone is the original’s plucking and strumming of innocent, stripped back guitars. Instead we have a brooding, throbbing bass, backed by Marnie’s icy vocal.
Producer David Kosten, the man behind records from Bat For Lashes, has brought his knack for a catchy pop hook to the party, bridging that tricky gap between traditional and contemporary quite nicely.
The resulting effect is an exhilarating piece of pop music that demonstrates a wide range of influences of an exciting newcomer. And I ain’t fooling.
