D-E-W-L

East London duo D-E-W-L formed in 2011 but have only very recently announced themselves. ‘Nobody Make a Sound’ is their debut single, having previously focused on production, having remixed the likes of St. Lucia and Foxes. They’ve been played by Annie Mac, Huw Stephens and are favourites of 6 Music. Their own track has been making waves recently, and is heralded for its own remix courtesy of Wave Machines.

‘Nobody Make a Sound’ has subterranean echoes and chimes with ambient gurgling and stuttering samples, but it’s also got a solid chunk of post-dubstep heft. It’s ponderous, dark and accomplished, with a great muted and veiled melody. The most obvious and frequent comparison has been Massive Attack, but I’d link it more readily to a more current spacey producer like Draper: a sulky Draper who’s just come to an understanding of the world in the darkest corner of the studio.

The disturbing video was shot by up-and-coming director Alexander Ingham Brooke and features an entirely deaf cast. ‘No Body Make a Sound’ was released only a few days ago on Make Mine Records.
