LIGHTBOXES

It’s not often that you find a duo that is comprised of a singer/percussionist and an upright bassist, but then Lightboxes come along and make you wonder why on Earth more people aren’t doing this. Donna Thompson and John Atterbury‘s debut single, Something Else, makes for a jazzy little toe-tapper at its core, but done with a deliciously warped little twist.

Swirling electronics and glitchy vocal samples fly around Thompson’s warm vocals. It has that same familiar yet slightly unusual style as Lianne La Havas, throwing a whole bunch of genres into the mix to create a colourful, exciting track; the sort of fun with sounds that only tUnE-yArDs is really doing. A fearless, funky introduction to Lightboxes, it’ll be interesting to see what’s coming next.
