MATT WOODS

Matt Woods seemingly has soul to burn on ‘Blue Skies’. The former choir boy enters the fray with a voice somewhere between James Blunt, James Morrison and Michael McDonald after a night out sponsored by Jack Daniels and Benson & Hedges. The downtempo vibe and skeletal electronic instrumentation on this is on point and a perfect foil for the Cornishman’s gravelly croonings. The whole thing is about showcasing what is a great voice and a darkly engaging lyric, with the beat providing just enough dynamism and hook action to carry and propel it.

The slick production is not surprising given the involvement of uber producer Jake Gosling’s Sticky Studios and there is a very pop savvy and commercial undercurrent to the whole feel of ‘Blue Skies’.
