MONT

Sometimes it can be hard to know where to start when discussing new bands. Take Mont for example. Do we start with their elegant and wistful melodies? Should we begin with the noodling digital flourishes? Perhaps the burgeoning synth lines or the deft composition of their glacial electronica? It’s tricky, especially when the band and track you are discussing is so good.

We’ll go with the basics to begin, some minor facts. Mont are Chris Hiller and Bryn White. They are also members of The Bronze Medal and Mont is a much more monochromatic and atmospheric project. The pair have been making music as a duo for a few years now and released their debut EP, If You Got It Wrong back in November.

With that out of the way, let’s get back to eulogising, especially about our featured track, ‘Moving Home’.

There is within ‘Moving Home’a gradual build that is so satisfying, most notably through the subtle insistence of the synth as it grows almost to grand church organ scale. You can feel it coming yet the journey and destination is superb. Layers begat layers with more glitchy electronics, sharp bubble popping beats and soft icy vocals building like the onset of a winter storm. Glacial, mellifluous and majestic. It’s a bit like if Harry Edwards produced The XX perhaps.

It can be hard knowing where to start, but we’re certain that when you reach the end you’ll be pressing repeat to get lost inside the snow once more.
