TIPPER OF THE WEEK: MACKS FAULKRON
This week we continue our latest feature on the Tipping Point, spotlighting the biggest and best emerging acts from across the UK. Each Monday, we ask one of our esteemed tippers to select five of their hottest tips to be featured on the site throughout the week.
Next up we’ve got Macks Faulkron, an artist manager and music producer, often working under the name REX Studio and REX Records. After years of performing as a musician in the industry, he set out to nurture and develop new emerging artists. REX Studio is based in Islington, London, and has been established since 2009. It has been home to artists including Algiers, Shame, Whenyoung, Kaiser Chiefs, Rejjie Snow and many more. Check out his top picks below!
NANCY
I saw NANCY for the first time this year at SXSW in a swanky hotel foyer. I was aware he was performing solo on this occasion, without his band, and I was expecting an acoustic guitar, but no! There he was with a karaoke machine singing “These Boots Are Made For Walking” as I came in, parading around the hotel and sitting with guests whilst performing. Fair to say he made an impression, I then checked out the current EP “Mysterious Visions” and it’s banging!
GRACE LIGHTMAN
If you like slightly weird alt/pop stuff, this is one to keep an eye out for. Her music has elements of French synth pop about it, a touch of Sebastien Tellier, Goldfrapp and even hints of the more obscure Italo Disco of the 1980’s. Grace’s voice is captivating, the concepts are great, and art direction is impeccable. I see big things coming her way this year.
OTTA
Otta supported Anna of The North recently at Village Underground and that’s where I heard of her first. To my knowledge she’s very early on in her career and the few tunes I’ve heard I’ve really dug. It’s pop music but it’s experiential, it’s chill and slightly haunting and atmospheric. I think she’s great and expect to see more from her this year.
DYLAN
I caught Dylan the first time as first on at a low key show at Thousand Island, opposite my studio. You could sense she had something special and is destined for bigger things. When I saw her live her voice reminded me a bit of Lana Del Ray and sometimes even bits of Adele, two much-loved female artists of the past decade. I think Dylan may be flying the flag for the next few to come.
SUN SILVA
Having your very first track, Blue Light, go straight on Fifa 19 is not bad going. I’ve known these guys since early on, and they’ve been in studio too. Super talented musicians and songwriters, influenced by bands such as Radiohead and Tame Impala, I’m excited to hear new sounds from these guys.
