TOTT #6: ELIZA AND THE BEAR

Back in August Essex quintet Eliza and the Bear brought ‘Brother’s Boat’ to the world, with its flashes of overwhelming guitar and moments of delicate orchestration. That was pretty special, yes? Well they’re offering up a second hit with ‘Upon The North’ and, dare I say, it is even more deadly. Perhaps more melodically charged than its predecessor, ‘Upon The North’ screams perfect measures of Arcade Fire and Band Of Horses. But what I like best about this track is that just as the comparisons suggest themselves; they have already become redundant as the song takes on a life of its own, twisting and turning as it developes into a grand, stadium-sized crescendo.

‘Upon The North’ is due for release through Generator on February 25th as a double A-side with ‘The Southern Wild’ and will, doubtless, kick start a big year for the band who play The Tipping Point showcases at The Roundhouse and Sage Gateshead in February. Keep an eye on the Eliza and the Bear website for further details.
