UNITED FRUIT

Those of you who are regular followers of our trusty emerging music blog will be aware that more often than not the artists we tip are brand spanking new. Today’s tip United Fruit however, have actually existed since 2008 and are highly respected in the Scottish DIY music scene, releasing their debut full-length Fault Lines in 2011. So yes, technically the Glasgow alt-rockers aren’t box-fresh, but they’re certainly emerging in the sense that now is the time for people to really sit up and take notice of the four-piece. Having impressed industry types and gig-goers alike in the last few years, the band are now working on a highly anticipated second album and are starting to reveal new material, the first track being ‘Nothing To Feel’. The song is taken from a cracking compilation, ‘Human Is Not Alone‘, which unites the UK DIY scene in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care and also features RM Hubbert, The Shipping News, Fat Goth and Zu.

While their previous releases sat comfortably in the noisy, fuzzy part of the alt-rock spectrum, paying homage to the likes of Sonic Youth and Shellac, Nothing To Feel demonstrates a slight change in direction for United Fruit with a more pop-infused, hooky sound. It’s certainly less fuzz-laden and there’s a great punchy sing-a-long chorus that brings to mind the stratospheric rise of fellow Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro. Despite Nothing To Feel’s anthemic quality, United Fruit haven’t abandoned their punk roots, with the track being led by urgent, break-neck guitar riffs and a blistering breakdown around the 1minute 30 seconds mark. A confident, powerful track which sets United Fruit out as band to keep a close eye on as we march forward to 2014.
