LOA LOA

‘Monet’ by Loa Loa is a sludgy, rifftastic beast, with time signature changes and spiky rhythms a-plenty that keep you on edge throughout. Reminiscent of Demob Happy or Dinosaur Pile-Up, these guys are the newest kids to spawn from the endless city-cum-band-factory that is Brighton. According to an interview with DIY mag this track is about a guy who punched a hole in an £8million original piece of Monet artwork. This figures, and I like to imagine the guy that did it had music akin to this unhinged banger spinning around his head as he performed his unexplained act of vandalism/defiance.

Largely dark in tone, ‘Monet’ does however burst into impressionistic, colourful life in the chorus, with the refrain of ‘Everybody else I know has done something new by now’ a self-inspiring call to arms to get out there and do something, like, I dunno, punch a hole in a piece of art. Heavy, sweaty, and frantic, Loa Loa’s sound is bone-shakingly exciting, and if they can deliver more slaps to the face like this I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more about these grunge-punk tearaways.
