MAUI

Despite only existing as a band since late 2013, London four-piece Maui have rather impressively already put together a four track EP. Self-recorded and self-released, the ‘Winter High’ EP is a lo-fi affair, drenched with reverb and off-kilter vocals.

An incredibly assured debut, ‘Winter High’ weaves a hypnotic tapestry of garage-rock inflected psychedelia, recalling the throbbing noise of Wooden Shjips. Lead track ‘Slide In’ is a scuzzy delight, opening with droning guitar riffs before thrashing its way into an irresistible groove. Its chorus sees high-pitched vocals smothered in layers of fuzz, while the track ends by tumbling into a cacophony of sludgy riffs. Sure, the name ‘Maui’ brings to mind tropical climes and Hawaiian shirts, but the ‘Winter High’ EP sounds like it could have easily been recorded in a sweaty San Francisco basement.
